The Great Apes Survival Partnership (GRASP) is a unique alliance of over 100 national governments, conservation organizations, research institutions, United Nations agencies and private companies, all committed to ensuring the long-term survival of great apes and their habitat in Africa and Asia. Established in 2001, GRASP facilitates communication and collaboration among partners at the highest political levels to protect chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans and bonobos. GRASP focuses its work in priority areas such as political advocacy, illegal trade, habitat protection and disease monitoring, among others, and addresses the threats to great ape survival through innovative programmes. GRASP has developed more than 100 conservation projects in 16 countries in the past decade, and also creates tools that allow partners to contribute to global campaigns. Co-hosted by the U.N. Environment Programme (UNEP) and the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), GRASP is based at UNEP headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.
